We took two samba and forró classes with Hélio and also went out two nights with him. I had previously tried to learn samba, but didn´t get the steps. With Hélio, however, it was really easy, he is very pedagogical and has a great sense of humour, which makes you relax and enjoy yourself. When we went out at night we tried a really off-the-beaten-track local forró place where we were able to dance with lots of different people and the second time to a famous, elegant samba club – perfect to see two kinds of clubs.

I opted for the one hour private lesson + night out in Lapa. Helio is very friendly and easy-going and speaks fluent English. He simplifies samba and forro into easy-to-learn step sequences that most people can master in an hour. Seeing Lapa with a true Carioca made it a unique and unforgettable experience that I would recommend to anyone, especially for solo travelers who prefer to experience Rio nightlife with a local guide.

I enjoyed my private class with Helio very much! I found him through the Lonely Planet, emailed him, and a few hours later he came to my hotel! In one hour he taught me the basics of samba, as well as forró, and the next day in a samba-club, I felt I could really dance those two dances.
